So your former flame broke your heart. Well, past is past. There's obviously a reason why it ended, so try to get over it.
1. Make a list of pros and cons of your previous relationship. Write down everything you can remember, good and bad. Think about the reasons that it's over. He/she cheated, treated you poorly, or you just couldn't get along. Whatever the reason, remember that there IS a reason you two aren't together anymore.
2. Create the perfect dream girlfriend/boyfriend. Write the traits that you'd like in your ideal significant other. Sweet, funny, caring, loving, smart. Write it all down. That's just the easy part.
3. Now go looking for him/her. Don't let it consume your life, and all your time. Write a list of people you'd be willing to go out with. It should be realistic, though. Don't put down Britney Spears or Adam Levine. That's probably not going to happen. Whenever you find that trait in one of the people on your list, write it under their name. Narrow it down by hanging out with them more often, or talking to them more than you would normally.
4. Don't interact with your ex. That might stir up old feelings, tricking you into thinking you still have a chance of making it work with them. Delete their number off your phone, get rid of all their emails, texts, voice mails, and if you have to, change your phone number. Don't put too much thought into this, though.
5. Don't make it official before you've considered your top three choices. Have a dinner date with each one of them before you let them call you their girlfriend/boyfriend. If that isn't enough, have up to three dates with each.
6. Gently let down the two you didn't choose. This way, if number one doesn't work, you might still have a chance with number two or three.
7. Take it slow. If you jump into it, you might forget to keep a hand over your heart. Also, it might just be a repeat of your last relationship. What did you do wrong? What was the problem? Whatever it was, try not to let it happen with your new guy/gal.
